Megan Chartrand is a Canadian soprano who has made a name for herself in the world of classical music. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, on May 28, 1989, Chartrand grew up in a musical family. Her mother was a pianist, and her father was a singer, so it was only natural that Chartrand would develop a love for music at a young age. Chartrand began singing in choirs when she was just six years old. She quickly discovered that she had a talent for singing and began taking voice lessons. She continued to sing in choirs throughout her childhood and teenage years, and by the time she was in high school, she knew that she wanted to pursue a career in music. After graduating from high school, Chartrand attended the University of Alberta, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance. During her time at the university, Chartrand had the opportunity to perform in a number of operas and concerts, including Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" and Handel's "Messiah." After completing her undergraduate degree, Chartrand moved to Toronto to pursue a Master of Music degree at the University of Toronto. While in Toronto, Chartrand continued to perform in operas and concerts, and she also began to make a name for herself as a soloist. One of Chartrand's most notable performances during her time in Toronto was her portrayal of the role of Susanna in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The performance was highly acclaimed, and Chartrand received rave reviews for her performance. In addition to her work as a soloist, Chartrand also became a member of the Canadian Opera Company's Ensemble Studio, which is a training program for young opera singers. During her time in the Ensemble Studio, Chartrand had the opportunity to work with some of the top opera singers and directors in the world. After completing her Master of Music degree, Chartrand moved to Germany to continue her training. She spent two years studying at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, where she worked with renowned soprano Ingeborg Danz. During her time in Germany, Chartrand had the opportunity to perform in a number of operas and concerts throughout Europe. One of her most notable performances was her portrayal of the role of Pamina in Mozart's "The Magic Flute" at the Hamburg State Opera. After completing her training in Germany, Chartrand returned to Canada and began to establish herself as a soloist. She has performed with a number of orchestras and opera companies throughout Canada, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the Canadian Opera Company. One of Chartrand's most notable performances in recent years was her portrayal of the role of Micaëla in Bizet's "Carmen" with the Canadian Opera Company. The performance was highly acclaimed, and Chartrand received rave reviews for her performance. In addition to her work as a soloist, Chartrand is also a passionate educator. She has taught voice lessons at a number of universities and music schools throughout Canada, and she is currently a voice instructor at the University of Toronto. Chartrand has received a number of awards and accolades throughout her career. In 2012, she was the recipient of the Richard Bradshaw Graduate Fellowship from the Canadian Opera Company. The fellowship is awarded to young opera singers who show exceptional promise.
