The group was founded in 1978 by tenor Louis Botto, who had a vision of creating a male vocal ensemble that would perform a wide range of music, from medieval chants to contemporary works. The ensemble's name, Chanticleer, is derived from the rooster in Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, who was known for his powerful and beautiful singing voice. The name was chosen to reflect the group's commitment to excellence in vocal performance. Over the years, Chanticleer has become known for their impeccable vocal technique, innovative programming, and dynamic stage presence. The group is made up of 12 male singers, each with a unique vocal range and style, who come together to create a sound that is both powerful and nuanced.
