Charles Rochester Young was an American composer, born on August 26, 1950, in New York City. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical pianist. Young began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City and later went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music. Young's early compositions were heavily influenced by jazz and popular music, but he soon began to explore classical music and incorporate it into his work. He was particularly interested in the music of the Baroque and Classical periods, and his compositions often featured elements of these styles. In 1976, Young received a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Italy, where he was able to immerse himself in the country's rich musical history. He studied with the renowned composer Luciano Berio and was exposed to a wide range of musical styles and traditions. Young's compositions are known for their intricate harmonies and rhythms, as well as their use of unconventional instruments and techniques. He often incorporated electronic music into his works, and his use of technology was ahead of its time. One of Young's most famous works is his Symphony No. 2, which was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic in 1991. The piece is a tribute to the city of New York and its diverse cultural heritage. It features a wide range of musical styles, from jazz to classical, and incorporates elements of African, Latin, and Asian music. Another notable work by Young is his Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra, which was commissioned by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1994. The piece showcases the versatility of the saxophone and features complex rhythms and harmonies. Young's music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also received numerous awards and honors for his work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition to his work as a composer, Young was also a respected educator. He taught at the University of Michigan and the University of California, San Diego, and was known for his innovative teaching methods and commitment to mentoring young musicians. Sadly, Charles Rochester Young passed away on January 3, 2018, at the age of 67. However, his legacy lives on through his music, which continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.
