Terje Winge is a Norwegian classical pianist who has made a name for himself as a performer, recording artist, and educator. Born on May 22, 1954, in Oslo, Norway, Winge showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, where he received his diploma in 1977. He continued his studies with renowned pianists such as György Sebők, Leon Fleisher, and Maria João Pires. Winge's career as a performer began in the late 1970s, when he won several international piano competitions, including the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, Germany, and the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, Belgium. These victories helped to establish him as a rising star in the classical music world, and he soon began to receive invitations to perform with major orchestras and at prestigious music festivals around the world. One of Winge's most notable performances was his debut with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in 1980, where he played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. The performance was widely praised by critics, who noted Winge's technical skill and musical sensitivity. He went on to perform with many other orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. In addition to his work as a soloist, Winge has also collaborated with many other musicians, including cellist Truls Mørk and violinist Arve Tellefsen. He has recorded numerous albums, including solo works by Chopin, Schumann, and Grieg, as well as chamber music by Brahms and Schubert. His recordings have received critical acclaim and have won several awards, including the Norwegian Grammy Award. Winge has also been active as an educator, teaching at the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo. He has also given masterclasses and workshops around the world, sharing his knowledge and experience with young musicians. Throughout his career, Winge has received many honors and awards for his contributions to classical music. In 1993, he was awarded the Sibelius Prize by the Finnish government for his performances of Finnish music. In 2004, he was made a Knight of the Order of St. Olav by the Norwegian government for his services to music. He has also been awarded the Grieg Prize and the Lindeman Prize, among others.
