Erno Kállai was a Hungarian classical pianist and composer who was born on January 1, 1928, in Budapest, Hungary. He was the youngest of three children and showed an early interest in music. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, so music was always a part of his life. Kállai began his piano studies at the age of six with his mother, and later studied with some of the most renowned pianists of his time, including Zoltán Kodály, Béla Bartók, and György Sándor. He also studied composition with László Lajtha and Ferenc Farkas. In 1945, Kállai made his debut as a pianist at the age of 17, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra. This performance was a huge success and marked the beginning of his career as a concert pianist. Over the next few years, Kállai performed extensively throughout Europe, playing with some of the most prestigious orchestras and conductors of the time. He also began to gain recognition as a composer, with his works being performed by various orchestras and ensembles. In 1956, Kállai left Hungary and moved to the United States, where he continued to perform and compose. He became a professor of piano at the University of Southern California and also taught at the University of California, Los Angeles. Throughout his career, Kállai was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. Kállai received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Liszt Prize from the Hungarian government, the Order of Merit from the Republic of Hungary, and the Medal of Honor from the city of Budapest. He was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Kállai continued to perform and compose until his death on December 31, 2005, at the age of 77.
