He was born on August 22, 1953, in Moscow, Russia, to a family of musicians. His father, Boris Zaretsky, was a renowned violist, and his mother, Olga Zaretsky, was a pianist. Michael grew up in a musical environment and started playing the violin at the age of six. Michael's family moved to the United States in 1975, and he continued his music education at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He studied under the guidance of renowned violinists such as Joseph Silverstein and Roman Totenberg. Michael's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly established himself as a promising young musician. In 1978, Michael joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra as a violist, a position he held for over 30 years.
