Role:EnsembleSymphony in C is a classical music ensemble based in Camden, New Jersey. The orchestra was founded in 1952 by the conductor and composer, Guido Ajmone-Marsan, who was a professor of music at Rutgers University. The ensemble was originally known as the Haddonfield Symphony Orchestra, but it was renamed Symphony in C in 2002. The orchestra has had a number of notable members over the years, including the violinist and conductor, Joseph Silverstein, who served as the music director from 1955 to 1959. Other notable members have included the cellist, Yo-Yo Ma, who performed with the orchestra in 1971, and the pianist, Emanuel Ax, who performed with the orchestra in 1972. Symphony in C has performed a wide range of classical music repertoire over the years, including works by Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. The orchestra has also commissioned and premiered a number of new works by contemporary composers, including Jennifer Higdon, Roberto Sierra, and Michael Daugherty. One of the highlights of Symphony in C's history was its performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in 2005. The orchestra performed a program of works by American composers, including Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring" and George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue." The performance was well-received by both the audience and the critics, and it helped to raise the profile of the orchestra. Symphony in C has also received a number of awards and honors over the years. In 2003, the orchestra was awarded the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that perform contemporary music. The orchestra has also been recognized by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts for its contributions to the arts in the region. In addition to its performances, Symphony in C is also committed to music education and outreach. The orchestra has a number of programs that bring classical music to schools and community organizations in the region. These programs include concerts for young audiences, masterclasses for music students, and workshops for music teachers. Overall, Symphony in C has established itself as one of the premier classical music ensembles in the region. With its commitment to both traditional repertoire and new music, as well as its dedication to music education and outreach, the orchestra has become an important cultural institution in the community.More....
