Henri Senee was a French composer who lived from 1893 to 1969. He was born in the city of Lyon, France, and showed an early interest in music. His parents were both amateur musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Senee began his formal music education at the age of six, when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly showed a talent for the instrument, and by the age of ten, he was already composing his own music. He continued his studies at the Conservatoire de Lyon, where he studied composition, harmony, and counterpoint. In 1914, at the age of 21, Senee was drafted into the French army to fight in World War I. He served as a medic and was stationed in the trenches for much of the war. Despite the difficult conditions, Senee continued to compose music during his time in the army. He wrote several pieces for piano and chamber ensembles, which he sent back to his family in Lyon. After the war, Senee returned to Lyon and resumed his studies at the Conservatoire. He also began to establish himself as a composer, with several of his works being performed in Lyon and other cities in France. In 1921, he won the Prix de Rome, a prestigious award for young composers, which allowed him to study in Rome for several years. During his time in Rome, Senee was exposed to the music of Italian composers such as Respighi and Casella, as well as the works of the great Italian Renaissance composers. He also traveled extensively throughout Italy, visiting museums and churches and studying the art and architecture of the country. Senee's music from this period reflects his interest in Italian culture and history. He wrote several works for orchestra, including a symphony inspired by the life of the Italian poet Dante Alighieri. He also wrote several chamber works, including a string quartet and a piano trio, which show the influence of Italian Renaissance music. In the 1930s, Senee returned to Lyon and became a professor of composition at the Conservatoire. He continued to compose throughout this period, writing several works for orchestra, including a ballet based on the legend of Tristan and Isolde. He also wrote several chamber works, including a sonata for violin and piano and a suite for cello and piano. During World War II, Senee remained in Lyon and continued to teach at the Conservatoire. He also continued to compose, despite the difficult conditions of the war. He wrote several works for piano, including a set of preludes and fugues inspired by the music of Bach. After the war, Senee continued to teach at the Conservatoire and to compose. He wrote several works for orchestra, including a symphony inspired by the French Revolution. He also wrote several chamber works, including a sonata for flute and piano and a trio for clarinet, cello, and piano. Senee's music is characterized by its lyricism and its use of traditional forms and structures. He was influenced by the music of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, as well as the Italian Renaissance composers. His music is often tonal and melodic, with a strong sense of harmony and counterpoint. Senee's works have been performed by orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout France and Europe. His music has also been recorded by several prominent musicians, including the pianist Jean-Philippe Collard and the cellist Maurice Gendron.
