Role:PerformerGabriel Dharmoo is a Canadian composer, vocalist, and interdisciplinary artist who has gained international recognition for his innovative and boundary-pushing work in the field of contemporary classical music. Born in Montreal in 1981, Dharmoo grew up in a multicultural family with roots in Mauritius, India, and China. From a young age, he was exposed to a wide range of musical traditions and styles, including Indian classical music, jazz, and rock. Dharmoo began his formal musical training at the age of 10, studying classical piano and voice. He later went on to study composition and music theory at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in 2005. During his time at the conservatory, Dharmoo became increasingly interested in exploring the intersections between different musical traditions and cultures, and began incorporating elements of Indian classical music, beatboxing, and other non-Western styles into his compositions. After completing his studies, Dharmoo began to establish himself as a performer and composer in the Montreal music scene. He quickly gained a reputation for his unique and experimental approach to music-making, and was soon invited to perform at a number of prestigious festivals and venues across Canada and Europe. One of Dharmoo's most notable early performances was his 2008 debut at the Festival de musique actuelle de Victoriaville, where he presented a solo vocal performance that incorporated elements of beatboxing, throat singing, and other extended vocal techniques. The performance was met with critical acclaim, and helped to establish Dharmoo as a rising star in the world of contemporary classical music. In the years that followed, Dharmoo continued to push the boundaries of what was possible in classical music, experimenting with new forms, styles, and techniques. He collaborated with a wide range of artists and musicians from around the world, and began to incorporate elements of theater, dance, and visual art into his performances. One of Dharmoo's most ambitious projects to date was his 2017 composition "Futile Spells," which was commissioned by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. The piece was a multimedia work that combined live music, video projections, and spoken word, and explored themes of magic, ritual, and transformation. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and helped to cement Dharmoo's reputation as one of the most innovative and exciting composers working today. In addition to his work as a composer and performer, Dharmoo has also been recognized for his contributions to music education and outreach. He has taught workshops and masterclasses at a number of universities and conservatories around the world, and has worked with a wide range of community organizations to promote music education and cultural exchange. Dharmoo's work has been recognized with a number of awards and honors over the years. In 2011, he was awarded the Prix Opus for "Discovery of the Year" by the Conseil québécois de la musique, and in 2016 he was awarded the prestigious Jules Léger Prize for New Chamber Music for his composition "Sous rature." He has also been a finalist for the Gaudeamus Award and the Prix collégien de musique contemporaine. Today, Dharmoo continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in classical music, exploring new forms, styles, and techniques, and collaborating with a wide range of artists and musicians from around the world.More....
