She was born into a family of musicians, and her father was a well-known violinist. Marik began playing the piano at a young age and showed great promise as a musician. Marik studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where she was a student of Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály. She also studied with Arnold Schoenberg in Vienna. Marik's training was rigorous, and she was known for her technical proficiency and musical sensitivity. In 1926, Marik made her debut as a soloist with the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra. She quickly gained a reputation as a talented pianist and began performing throughout Europe. In 1930, Marik moved to the United States and settled in New York City. Marik's career in the United States was marked by numerous performances and accolades. She performed with many of the major orchestras in the country, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Marik was also a frequent performer on radio and television, and she recorded extensively. One of Marik's most notable performances was her 1943 performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Artur Rodziński. The performance was widely praised, and Marik was hailed as a virtuoso pianist. Marik was also known for her interpretations of the music of Bartók and Kodály. She was a close friend of both composers and worked closely with them to develop her interpretations of their music. Marik's recordings of Bartók's piano music are considered some of the best ever made. In addition to her performing career, Marik was also a respected teacher. She taught at the Juilliard School in New York City and at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Many of her students went on to have successful careers as pianists. Marik received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1950, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic for her contributions to Hungarian music. She was also awarded the Cross of Merit of the Republic of Austria and the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Marik continued to perform and teach until her death on December 20, 1986, in Los Angeles, California. She was 81 years old. Marik's legacy as a pianist and teacher continues to be celebrated today, and her recordings are still widely admired for their technical brilliance and musical sensitivity.More....
