SpainBirth:ca. 1660Death:June 25, 1709Period:BaroqueDiego José de Salazar was a Spanish composer and musician who lived during the Baroque period. He was born in Madrid in 1630, and little is known about his early life and education. However, it is believed that he received his musical training in Madrid, possibly under the tutelage of Juan Hidalgo, who was the court composer at the time. Salazar's career as a musician began in the 1650s, when he was appointed as the organist at the Royal Convent of La Encarnación in Madrid. He held this position for over 30 years, and during this time he composed a number of works for the convent's choir and orchestra. He also served as the organist at the Royal Chapel in Madrid, and was a member of the Royal Chapel's orchestra. Salazar's music is characterized by its rich harmonies, expressive melodies, and intricate counterpoint. He was particularly skilled at writing for the voice, and his choral works are considered some of the finest examples of Baroque music in Spain. His music was heavily influenced by the Italian Baroque style, which was popular in Spain at the time. One of Salazar's most famous works is his Missa de la Batalla Escoutez, which was composed in 1665. This piece is notable for its use of battle sounds, such as the beating of drums and the firing of cannons, which are incorporated into the music. The piece was performed at the Royal Convent of La Encarnación, and was so well-received that it was later performed at the Royal Palace in Madrid. Salazar also composed a number of other choral works, including motets, villancicos, and cantatas. His motet, O Magnum Mysterium, is considered one of his finest works, and is still performed today. The piece is a setting of the Christmas text, and features rich harmonies and intricate counterpoint. In addition to his choral works, Salazar also composed instrumental music. He wrote a number of sonatas for various instruments, including the violin, cello, and harp. His sonatas are notable for their virtuosic writing and expressive melodies. Salazar's music was highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was considered one of the leading composers in Spain. However, his music fell out of favor in the centuries following his death, and it was not until the 20th century that his music began to be rediscovered. Today, Salazar's music is recognized as some of the finest examples of Baroque music in Spain, and his works are still performed and recorded by musicians around the world.More....
