Edwin R. Hawkins was a renowned American gospel musician and composer who was born on August 19, 1943, in Oakland, California. He was the youngest of eight siblings and grew up in a musical family. His mother, Daniel Hawkins, was a pianist and choir director, and his father, Bishop J. E. Hawkins, was a Baptist minister and gospel singer. Hawkins began his musical career at an early age, singing in his father's church choir. He later formed his own gospel group, the Northern California State Youth Choir, which gained popularity in the Bay Area. In 1967, Hawkins and his group recorded their first album, Let Us Go into the House of the Lord, which included the hit single "Oh Happy Day." "Oh Happy Day" became an instant success and went on to become one of the most popular gospel songs of all time. The song was a crossover hit, reaching the top of the charts in both the United States and Europe. It also won a Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance in 1969. Hawkins continued to compose and perform gospel music throughout his career, releasing numerous albums and collaborating with other musicians. He was known for his innovative style, which blended traditional gospel music with elements of jazz, blues, and R&B. In addition to his musical career, Hawkins was also a pastor and community leader. He founded the Love Center Ministries in Oakland, which became one of the largest churches in the Bay Area. He was also involved in various social and political causes, including the civil rights movement and the fight against HIV/AIDS. Hawkins passed away on January 15, 2018, at the age of 74. His legacy as a pioneering gospel musician and composer continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.
