Constantine Caravassilis was a Greek-American composer and pianist who was born on December 12, 1925, in Athens, Greece. He was the son of a prominent Greek family, and his father was a successful businessman. Caravassilis showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He received his first formal music education at the Athens Conservatory, where he studied piano and composition. In 1947, Caravassilis moved to the United States to continue his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City. He studied with some of the most prominent composers of the time, including Aaron Copland, Roger Sessions, and Vincent Persichetti. During his time at Juilliard, Caravassilis also studied piano with Rosina Lhévinne and won several awards for his compositions. After completing his studies at Juilliard, Caravassilis began a successful career as a composer and pianist. He composed music for a variety of ensembles, including orchestras, chamber groups, and solo instruments. His music was characterized by its lyricism, rhythmic vitality, and use of traditional forms and techniques. One of Caravassilis's most notable works is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1955. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist, with fast and intricate passages that require great technical skill. The work also features lush harmonies and a memorable melody in the second movement. The concerto was premiered by the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein, and it has since become a staple of the piano concerto repertoire.
