Valentina Naforniță is a Moldovan soprano who has gained international recognition for her powerful and emotive performances. Born on March 24, 1987, in the small town of Călărași, Moldova, Naforniță grew up in a family of musicians. Her mother was a music teacher, and her father played the accordion. From a young age, Naforniță showed a natural talent for singing, and she began taking voice lessons at the age of 9. Naforniță's early musical education was in the Moldovan choral tradition, which emphasizes a cappella singing and complex harmonies. She sang in several choirs as a child and teenager, including the renowned Madrigal Choir of Bucharest. In 2006, Naforniță enrolled at the Academy of Music, Theatre, and Fine Arts in Chișinău, Moldova, where she studied under the renowned soprano Maria Bieșu. Naforniță's breakthrough came in 2011, when she won the prestigious BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition. She was the first Moldovan to win the competition, and her performance of "Caro nome" from Verdi's Rigoletto was widely praised for its technical precision and emotional depth. The win brought Naforniță to the attention of opera companies and concert halls around the world, and she quickly became one of the most sought-after sopranos of her generation. Since winning the Cardiff competition, Naforniță has performed in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses and concert halls, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. She has sung leading roles in operas by Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, and Donizetti, among others, and has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned conductors and orchestras. One of Naforniță's most acclaimed performances came in 2013, when she sang the role of Gilda in Verdi's Rigoletto at the Royal Opera House in London. The production, directed by David McVicar, was widely praised for its innovative staging and Naforniță's powerful and nuanced performance. The Guardian called her "a revelation...her voice is pure and true, with a silvery top and a rich, velvety middle." Naforniță has also won several awards and honors for her performances. In 2014, she was named a "Rising Star" by the European Concert Hall Organization, which recognizes young artists who show exceptional talent and promise. She has also been awarded the Order of Honor by the government of Moldova, and in 2019 she was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace, in recognition of her commitment to promoting cultural diversity and understanding through music. Despite her international success, Naforniță remains deeply connected to her Moldovan roots. She has performed frequently in her home country, and has worked to promote the development of classical music in Moldova. In 2017, she founded the Valentina Naforniță International Music Festival, which brings together young musicians from around the world to perform and collaborate with established artists. Naforniță's success as a classical musician has been driven by her exceptional talent, hard work, and dedication to her craft. She has said that her goal as a performer is to "touch people's hearts" through her music, and she has certainly achieved that goal with her powerful and emotive performances. As she continues to perform and inspire audiences around the world, it is clear that Valentina Naforniță is one of the most talented and exciting sopranos of her generation.
