Leo Grinhauz was born on May 15, 1985, in Moscow, Russia. He was born into a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned cellist and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Grinhauz was exposed to classical music and began playing the cello at the age of four. Grinhauz's talent was quickly recognized, and he began performing in public at the age of six. He won his first competition at the age of eight and went on to win numerous awards throughout his childhood and teenage years. In 2003, Grinhauz moved to the United States to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. He studied under the tutelage of renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2007. After graduating from Juilliard, Grinhauz began performing professionally and quickly gained recognition for his virtuosic playing and musicality. He has performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Grinhauz's most notable performances was his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 2010. He performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto to critical acclaim, with The New York Times praising his "rich, burnished tone and effortless technique." Grinhauz has also won numerous awards throughout his career, including the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2012 and the Leonard Bernstein Award in 2015. He has been praised for his commitment to contemporary music, with The Guardian describing him as "a fearless champion of new music." In addition to his performing career, Grinhauz is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught masterclasses at numerous institutions, including the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Grinhauz is known for his passionate and expressive playing, as well as his dedication to exploring the full range of the cello's capabilities. He has collaborated with numerous composers to create new works for the cello, and has also arranged and transcribed works from other genres, including jazz and pop music.
