He was born in Milan, Italy, on February 3, 1822, to a family of musicians. His father, Francesco Marchesi, was a well-known tenor, and his mother, Teresa Marchesi, was a soprano. Salvatore Marchesi showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano and singing at a young age. Marchesi's musical education began at the Milan Conservatory, where he studied composition with Francesco Basili and counterpoint with Stefano Ronchetti-Monteviti. He also studied singing with his mother and later with his father. Marchesi's talent as a singer was recognized early on, and he made his debut as a tenor in 1840 at the Teatro Carcano in Milan. Marchesi's career as a singer was successful, and he performed in many of the major opera houses in Europe, including La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. However, Marchesi's true passion was composition, and he began to focus more on writing music in the 1850s. Marchesi's compositions were influenced by the Romantic style of music that was popular in the mid-19th century. His works include operas, cantatas, chamber music, and songs. One of his most famous works is the opera "Don Giovanni Tenorio," which premiered in 1867 at the Teatro Regio in Turin. The opera was well-received and was performed in many other theaters throughout Italy. Marchesi's other notable works include the cantata "La morte di Socrate," which was written in 1869 and is based on the death of the Greek philosopher Socrates. The cantata features a solo voice accompanied by a choir and orchestra and is considered one of Marchesi's most significant works. Marchesi was also a respected music educator and taught at the Milan Conservatory from 1865 to 1897. He was known for his innovative teaching methods and his emphasis on the importance of vocal technique. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as singers and composers. In addition to his work as a composer and educator, Marchesi was also involved in the music publishing industry. He founded the publishing company Casa Musicale Sonzogno in 1874, which became one of the most important music publishers in Italy. Marchesi died in Milan on December 11, 1908, at the age of 86. His legacy as a composer and educator continues to be celebrated today, and his works are still performed in concert halls around the world.More....
