He was the son of a French mother and a German father, and his family moved to Germany when he was a child. Mager showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, where he received a degree in piano performance. Mager's career as a classical music artist began in the 1950s, when he started performing in concerts and recitals throughout Europe. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile pianist, and his performances were praised for their technical precision and emotional depth. Mager's repertoire included works by some of the greatest composers in classical music, including Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, and Schumann. One of the highlights of Mager's career was his performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1958. He was invited to play Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the "Emperor" concerto, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance was a huge success, and Mager received a standing ovation from the audience. He went on to perform at the Salzburg Festival several more times throughout his career. Mager also performed with many other prestigious orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic.
