Role:Composer PerformerBirth:1874Death:1961Bohumir Kryl was a Czech-American composer, conductor, and cornetist who was born on June 22, 1875, in Krasna Lhota, Bohemia, which is now part of the Czech Republic. He was the son of a village schoolmaster and grew up in a musical family. His father played the violin, and his mother sang in the church choir. Kryl's older brother, Frank, was a renowned cornetist and conductor, and his younger brother, Josef, was a composer and conductor. Kryl began playing the cornet at a young age and quickly showed a talent for music. He studied at the Prague Conservatory, where he was a student of the famous composer Antonin Dvorak. After completing his studies, Kryl joined his brother Frank's band, which toured throughout Europe and the United States. In 1895, Kryl immigrated to the United States and settled in Chicago. He quickly became a sought-after cornetist and performed with many of the top bands and orchestras of the day. In 1898, he joined the Sousa Band, led by the famous composer and conductor John Philip Sousa. Kryl played with the Sousa Band for several years and was known for his virtuosic cornet solos. In addition to his performing career, Kryl was also a prolific composer. He wrote over 300 works, including marches, waltzes, polkas, and other pieces for band and orchestra. Many of his compositions were inspired by his Czech heritage, and he often incorporated folk melodies and rhythms into his music. One of Kryl's most famous compositions is his "Bohemian Girl" suite, which is based on themes from the opera of the same name by Michael William Balfe. The suite includes four movements: "Overture," "The Heart Bowed Down," "I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls," and "The Light of Other Days." The piece is a showcase for the cornet, and Kryl often performed it as a soloist with his own band. Another notable work by Kryl is his "Carnival of Venice" variations, which is a set of variations on the popular Italian folk song "Il Carnevale di Venezia." The piece is a tour de force for the cornet, and Kryl's virtuosic playing and inventive variations made it a favorite of audiences and fellow musicians alike. Kryl was also a respected conductor and led several bands and orchestras throughout his career. In 1912, he formed his own band, the Bohumir Kryl Band, which toured extensively throughout the United States and Canada. The band was known for its high-quality musicianship and innovative programming, which often included Kryl's own compositions. In addition to his musical career, Kryl was also a noted inventor and businessman. He held several patents for musical instruments and accessories, including a valve mechanism for the cornet and a device for cleaning brass instruments. He also founded the Kryl Phonograph Company, which produced recordings of his own band and other popular musicians of the day. Kryl's career was cut short by his untimely death in 1961 at the age of 86. However, his legacy as a composer, performer, and innovator in the world of music lives on. His compositions continue to be performed by bands and orchestras around the world, and his influence on the development of the cornet as a solo instrument is still felt today. Bohumir Kryl was a true musical pioneer, and his contributions to the world of classical music will be remembered for generations to come.More....
