He graduated with honors in 1949 and went on to pursue further studies in Vienna, Austria, and Paris, France. In 1952, Gurtner made his debut as a concert pianist, performing with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. His performance was well-received, and he quickly gained recognition as a talented pianist. Over the next few years, Gurtner performed extensively throughout Europe, playing with some of the most prestigious orchestras and conductors of the time. One of the highlights of Gurtner's career was his performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1956. He played Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K. 467, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. The performance was a huge success, and Gurtner received critical acclaim for his interpretation of the piece.
