He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. From a young age, Kjerrman showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He was a prodigious talent and quickly developed a reputation as a gifted musician. Kjerrman's early musical education was under the tutelage of his father, who was a respected music teacher in Stockholm. He received his formal training at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he studied under the renowned pianist and composer, Wilhelm Stenhammar. Kjerrman's talent was quickly recognized, and he was awarded several scholarships to study abroad. In 1940, Kjerrman traveled to Paris to study with the legendary pianist and teacher, Alfred Cortot. He spent several years in Paris, honing his skills and developing his unique style. During this time, he also had the opportunity to perform in some of the most prestigious concert halls in Europe, including the Salle Pleyel and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Kjerrman's career took off in the 1950s, when he began performing regularly with some of the world's leading orchestras. He made his debut with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 1952, and went on to perform with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic, among others. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin. Kjerrman's performances were always highly acclaimed, and he received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1956, he was awarded the Litteris et Artibus medal by the Swedish government in recognition of his contributions to the arts. He was also awarded the Royal Swedish Academy of Music's prestigious Léonie Sonning Music Prize in 1972. In addition to his performances, Kjerrman was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm for many years, and his students included some of the most talented young pianists of his generation. He was known for his rigorous approach to teaching, and for his ability to inspire his students to achieve their full potential. Kjerrman continued to perform and teach well into his later years, and remained an active and influential figure in the world of classical music until his death in 2006.
