In 1952, Helguera moved to Paris to further his musical education. He studied at the École Normale de Musique de Paris and the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied composition under the guidance of Olivier Messiaen. During his time in Paris, Helguera was exposed to a wide range of musical styles and was greatly influenced by the works of French composers such as Debussy, Ravel, and Satie. Helguera's early works were heavily influenced by Spanish folk music and the works of Spanish composers such as Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Rodrigo. His first major work, the Suite Española, was composed in 1954 and was well-received by audiences and critics alike. The suite was a collection of six pieces for piano that showcased Helguera's mastery of Spanish folk music. In the 1960s, Helguera's style began to evolve, and he began incorporating elements of avant-garde and experimental music into his compositions. His works from this period, such as the String Quartet No. 1 and the Piano Sonata No. 2, were characterized by their complex harmonies and unconventional structures. Helguera's most famous work, the opera La Celestina, was composed in 1970. The opera was based on the 15th-century Spanish novel of the same name and was a critical and commercial success. The opera was praised for its innovative use of electronic music and its incorporation of Spanish folk music. Throughout his career, Helguera was known for his ability to blend traditional Spanish music with modernist and experimental techniques. His works were characterized by their complex harmonies, unconventional structures, and innovative use of electronic music. Helguera's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1987, he was awarded the National Music Prize by the Spanish Ministry of Culture.
