The Vienna Operetta Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that specializes in performing operettas and other light classical music. The orchestra was founded in Vienna, Austria in 1991 by conductor and pianist Franz Bauer-Theussl, who had previously served as the principal conductor of the Vienna Volksoper and the Vienna State Opera. Bauer-Theussl's vision for the Vienna Operetta Orchestra was to revive the tradition of Viennese operetta, which had fallen out of favor in the mid-20th century. He assembled a group of talented musicians who shared his passion for this music, and the orchestra quickly gained a reputation for its lively and authentic performances. One of the highlights of the Vienna Operetta Orchestra's early years was its performance at the 1994 Salzburg Festival, one of the most prestigious classical music festivals in the world. The orchestra's concert, which featured works by Johann Strauss II, Franz Lehár, and other composers of the Viennese operetta tradition, was a critical and commercial success, and helped to establish the ensemble as a major force in the classical music world. Over the years, the Vienna Operetta Orchestra has continued to perform at major venues and festivals around the world, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House, and the Lincoln Center in New York City. The orchestra has also released several acclaimed recordings, including a series of CDs featuring the music of Johann Strauss II. In addition to its performances and recordings, the Vienna Operetta Orchestra has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2001, the orchestra was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon an artist in Austria. The following year, the orchestra was named an official cultural ambassador of the city of Vienna, a title that it still holds today. Despite its many achievements, the Vienna Operetta Orchestra remains committed to its original mission of preserving and promoting the Viennese operetta tradition. The ensemble continues to perform this music with passion and authenticity, delighting audiences around the world with its lively and engaging performances.
