Born in New York City in 1953, Keyes grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a very young age. She received her early training from her father and later studied with renowned violinists such as Ivan Galamian, Dorothy DeLay, and Joseph Silverstein. Keyes attended the Juilliard School of Music, where she earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music.
