He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical pianist. Schimmel began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the clarinet and saxophone. He attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition and a Master of Music degree in composition and theory. He then went on to earn a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition from the University of Michigan. Schimmel's compositions are known for their complexity and use of unconventional techniques. He often incorporates elements of jazz and rock music into his classical compositions, creating a unique and eclectic sound. Some of his most notable works include "The Mysteries Remain," "The Sleep of Reason," and "The Invention of Memory." "The Mysteries Remain" is a chamber work for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano that was commissioned by the Verdehr Trio. The piece is based on the poetry of Emily Dickinson and explores themes of mystery and uncertainty. It premiered in 2007 and has since been performed by numerous ensembles around the world. "The Sleep of Reason" is a concerto for clarinet and orchestra that was commissioned by the Michigan State University Symphony Orchestra. The piece is inspired by the artwork of Francisco Goya and explores the themes of darkness and chaos. It premiered in 2011 and has been performed by several orchestras, including the Lansing Symphony Orchestra and the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra. "The Invention of Memory" is a multimedia work that combines music, video, and spoken word. The piece was commissioned by the University of Michigan and explores the concept of memory and how it is constructed.
