Her mother was a singer and her father played the saxophone. Reams began singing at a young age and quickly developed a passion for classical music. Reams attended the Chicago High School for the Arts, where she studied classical voice. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan. Throughout her education, Reams received numerous awards and honors for her vocal performances. In 2015, she was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She was also a winner of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition in 2016 and 2017. After completing her education, Reams began performing professionally. She has appeared in numerous operas and concerts across the United States. Some of her most notable performances include her portrayal of Bess in Porgy and Bess at the Glimmerglass Festival in 2017 and her performance as the mezzo-soprano soloist in Handel's Messiah with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2018. Reams has also been recognized for her performances. In 2019, she was awarded the Richard Tucker Career Grant, which is given to young opera singers who show great promise. She was also a recipient of the 2020 Sphinx Medal of Excellence, which recognizes outstanding classical musicians of color. In addition to her performances, Reams is also passionate about music education. She has worked as a teaching artist with the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Civic Youth Ensembles. She also founded the Zoie Reams Vocal Studio, where she teaches private voice lessons to students of all ages.
