Jesús Bal y Gay was a Spanish composer, musicologist, and writer who was born on May 14, 1905, in Orense, Galicia, Spain. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father, José Bal y Gay, was a composer and conductor, and his mother, María Gay, was a singer and pianist. Jesús Bal y Gay showed an early interest in music and began studying piano and composition at a young age. Bal y Gay studied at the Madrid Conservatory, where he received a degree in piano and composition. He also studied musicology at the University of Madrid, where he earned a doctorate in 1930. During his studies, he became interested in the music of his native Galicia and began to research and collect traditional Galician folk music. In 1931, Bal y Gay moved to Paris, where he studied with the composer and musicologist Nadia Boulanger. He also studied with the composer Manuel de Falla, who became a mentor and friend. Bal y Gay's time in Paris was a formative period in his career, and he was exposed to a wide range of musical styles and ideas. Bal y Gay returned to Spain in 1936, just as the Spanish Civil War was beginning. He became involved in the Republican cause and worked as a music critic and cultural organizer. He also continued his research into Galician folk music and published a book on the subject in 1937. After the war, Bal y Gay went into exile in Mexico, where he lived for the rest of his life. He became a professor at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City and continued to compose and write about music. He also became involved in the cultural life of Mexico and was a founding member of the Mexican Academy of Music. Bal y Gay's music is characterized by its use of traditional Spanish and Galician folk melodies and rhythms. He was also influenced by the music of Manuel de Falla and other Spanish composers. His works include orchestral music, chamber music, choral music, and songs. One of Bal y Gay's most famous works is his Suite Gallega, which was composed in 1935. The suite is based on traditional Galician folk melodies and includes four movements: "Alborada," "Muiñeira," "Cantiga," and "Danza." The suite has become a staple of the Spanish orchestral repertoire and is often performed in concerts and festivals. Another notable work by Bal y Gay is his opera, "El mozo de mulas," which was composed in 1948. The opera is based on a play by the Spanish writer Juan del Encina and tells the story of a young man who falls in love with a woman who is already engaged to another man. The opera is notable for its use of traditional Spanish melodies and rhythms and has been performed in Spain and Mexico. Bal y Gay was also a prolific writer and musicologist. He wrote several books on Spanish and Galician music, including "La música gallega" (1937) and "La música en la corte de los Reyes Católicos" (1956). He also wrote articles and reviews for music journals and newspapers. In addition to his work as a composer and musicologist, Bal y Gay was also a cultural organizer and advocate. He was involved in the creation of several music festivals in Mexico, including the Festival Cervantino and the Festival de México. He also worked to promote the music of other Spanish and Latin American composers and was a champion of cultural diversity and exchange. Jesús Bal y Gay died on October 3, 1993, in Mexico City.
