Józef Wieniawski was a Polish composer and pianist who lived from 1837 to 1912. He was born in Lublin, Poland, into a family of musicians. His father, Tobiasz Pietruszka, was a violinist and composer, and his older brother, Henryk Wieniawski, was a renowned violin virtuoso and composer. Józef Wieniawski began his musical education at a young age, studying piano with his mother and violin with his father. He showed great talent as a pianist and composer, and at the age of 12, he performed his first public concert in Warsaw. He continued his studies in Berlin, where he studied piano with Theodor Kullak and composition with Friedrich Kiel. In 1857, Wieniawski moved to Paris, where he became a student of Franz Liszt. He also studied composition with Charles Gounod and Camille Saint-Saëns. During his time in Paris, Wieniawski became a prominent figure in the city's musical scene, performing as a pianist and composer and collaborating with other musicians and artists. Wieniawski's compositions are characterized by their virtuosity and technical brilliance, as well as their lyrical and expressive qualities. He wrote music for piano, violin, and orchestra, as well as vocal music and chamber music. Some of his most famous works include his Piano Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp minor, his Violin Sonata in D minor, and his opera "La fiancée de Corinthe." Wieniawski's Violin Sonata in D minor was composed in 1875 and dedicated to his brother Henryk. The sonata is a virtuosic showcase for the violin, with fast and intricate passages and expressive melodies. It is considered one of the most important works in the violin repertoire and is still frequently performed today. Wieniawski's opera "La fiancée de Corinthe" was composed in 1867 and premiered in Paris the following year. The opera is based on a story by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and tells the story of a young man who falls in love with a statue.
