The group was founded in 1960 by Dr. Maynard Klein, who served as the director until 1990. Since then, the ensemble has been led by a number of talented conductors, including Dr. Jerry Blackstone, who has been at the helm since 1997. The Orpheus Singers are made up of approximately 50 undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. The group is known for their exceptional musicianship and their ability to perform a wide range of repertoire, from Renaissance motets to contemporary works. Over the years, the Orpheus Singers have performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. They have also toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, earning critical acclaim for their performances. One of the highlights of the Orpheus Singers' career was their performance at the 2009 American Choral Directors Association National Conference in Oklahoma City. The group was selected to perform as one of only six choirs from across the country, and their performance was met with standing ovations and rave reviews. In addition to their performances, the Orpheus Singers have also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2015, they were awarded the prestigious Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence by Chorus America, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the choral art form.
