Role:EnsemblePeriod:RomanticGenre:ChamberThe Bergonzi String Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over three decades. The quartet was founded in 1989 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Bergonzi String Quartet were Glenn Basham (violin), Pamela McConnell (violin), Melvin Ritter (viola), and Ross Harbaugh (cello). All four musicians were accomplished performers in their own right, having studied at some of the most prestigious music schools in the world, including the Juilliard School, the Eastman School of Music, and the New England Conservatory. The quartet took its name from the renowned Italian violin maker Carlo Bergonzi, whose instruments are highly prized by musicians for their exceptional tone and craftsmanship. The Bergonzi String Quartet has been fortunate enough to play on several Bergonzi instruments throughout their career, which has undoubtedly contributed to their unique sound and musical style. From the very beginning, the Bergonzi String Quartet was committed to exploring the full range of the chamber music repertoire, from the classics of Mozart and Beethoven to the contemporary works of living composers. They quickly gained a reputation for their technical precision, musical sensitivity, and innovative interpretations of both well-known and lesser-known works. Over the years, the Bergonzi String Quartet has performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls and music festivals in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Ravinia Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival. They have also collaborated with some of the most celebrated musicians of our time, including pianist Leon Fleisher, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and violinist Itzhak Perlman. One of the highlights of the Bergonzi String Quartet's career was their performance of the complete Beethoven string quartet cycle at the University of Miami in 1999. This monumental undertaking involved performing all 16 of Beethoven's string quartets over the course of six concerts, and it was widely regarded as a triumph of both musical and physical endurance. In addition to their many performances, the Bergonzi String Quartet has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout their career. They were the first ensemble to win the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1990, which is awarded annually to outstanding young musicians who demonstrate exceptional talent and promise. They have also been awarded the Naumburg Chamber Music Award, the Cleveland Quartet Award, and the Florida Governor's Award for the Arts. Despite their many accomplishments, the Bergonzi String Quartet remains committed to their original mission of exploring the full range of the chamber music repertoire and creating a unique sound that is both technically precise and emotionally expressive. They continue to perform regularly and to inspire audiences with their exceptional musicianship and dedication to their craft.More....
