Michael Petrov is a British cellist who has established himself as one of the most exciting and versatile young musicians of his generation. Born in 1994 in Bulgaria, Petrov moved to London with his family at the age of four. He began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Petrov studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he was a student of Louise Hopkins. He also received guidance from renowned cellists such as Steven Isserlis, Heinrich Schiff, and Ralph Kirshbaum. Petrov has won numerous awards and prizes throughout his career, including the Royal Philharmonic Society's Julius Isserlis Scholarship, the Guildhall School's Lutine Prize, and the Musicians' Company Prince's Prize. He was also a finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 2011. Petrov has performed as a soloist with many of the UK's leading orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He has also given recitals at major venues such as Wigmore Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, and the Barbican Centre. One of Petrov's most notable performances was his debut at the BBC Proms in 2017, where he performed Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The performance was widely praised for Petrov's virtuosic playing and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music. Petrov is also a passionate chamber musician and has collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including pianist Steven Osborne, violinist Alina Ibragimova, and the Belcea Quartet.
