She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Lagace showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Lagace's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began taking piano lessons with her mother and quickly progressed, winning her first competition at the age of six. Lagace continued to study music throughout her childhood and adolescence, attending the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and later the Juilliard School in New York City. Lagace's talent and dedication to music paid off, and she quickly gained recognition as one of the most promising young pianists of her generation. She won numerous awards and competitions, including the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2001.
