He was the son of a well-known Mexican composer, Ernesto García Cabral, who was also a pianist and conductor. García de León grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. He studied music at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. García de León's early compositions were influenced by the music of his father and other Mexican composers such as Carlos Chávez and Silvestre Revueltas. He also drew inspiration from European composers such as Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky. García de León's music is characterized by its use of Mexican folk melodies and rhythms, as well as its incorporation of modernist techniques. One of García de León's early works, "Tres Piezas para Piano" (Three Pieces for Piano), was composed in 1962 and reflects his interest in modernist techniques such as serialism and atonality. The work was well-received and helped establish García de León as a promising young composer. In 1964, García de León was awarded a scholarship to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. While there, he studied with the renowned composer and teacher, Roger Sessions. García de León's time at Juilliard was a formative experience, and he later credited Sessions with helping him develop his own unique voice as a composer. After completing his studies at Juilliard, García de León returned to Mexico and began teaching at the National Conservatory of Music. He also continued to compose and his works began to gain wider recognition. In 1970, he was awarded the National Prize for Arts and Sciences in the field of Fine Arts, which was a significant honor in Mexico. One of García de León's most famous works is his "Concierto para Piano y Orquesta" (Concerto for Piano and Orchestra), which was composed in 1972. The work is characterized by its use of Mexican folk melodies and rhythms, as well as its incorporation of modernist techniques such as serialism and atonality. The concerto was premiered by the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico and was well-received by audiences and critics alike. In addition to his work as a composer, García de León was also a respected pianist. He often performed his own works in concert and was known for his virtuosic playing. He also collaborated with other musicians and composers, including the Mexican composer Mario Lavista. García de León continued to compose and perform throughout his career, and his works were performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world. He was also a respected teacher and mentor, and many of his students went on to become successful composers and musicians in their own right. Ernesto García de León passed away on January 7, 2017, at the age of 75. He left behind a legacy as one of Mexico's most important composers of the 20th century. His music continues to be performed and studied by musicians and scholars around the world, and his contributions to the field of classical music are widely recognized and celebrated.More....
