Daniel Kantor is a contemporary American composer of classical music, known for his choral and instrumental works. Born in 1960 in Cleveland, Ohio, Kantor grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. He later studied composition at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Minnesota, where he earned his Master of Music degree. Kantor's early works were primarily for solo piano and chamber ensembles, but he soon began to focus on choral music. His most famous composition, "Night of Silence," was written in 1981 and has since become a beloved Christmas carol. The piece features a simple melody and harmonies, with a hauntingly beautiful flute solo. It has been performed by countless choirs and has been recorded by several artists, including Kantor himself. In addition to "Night of Silence," Kantor has composed numerous other choral works, including "Sing We Now of Christmas," "All the Earth Rejoice," and "The Lord Bless You and Keep You." His choral music is known for its lyrical melodies, lush harmonies, and thoughtful texts. Many of his works are based on traditional hymns and carols, but he also writes original texts and music. Kantor's instrumental works include pieces for solo piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. His "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra" was premiered by the Minnesota Orchestra in 1995, with Kantor as the soloist. The piece features virtuosic piano writing and lush orchestration, and has been praised for its emotional depth and beauty. In addition to his work as a composer, Kantor is also a respected conductor and educator. He has served as the music director of several churches and has conducted numerous choirs and orchestras. He has also taught composition and music theory at several universities, including Augsburg College and the University of Minnesota. Kantor's music has been performed by many of the world's leading ensembles, including the Minnesota Orchestra, the St. Olaf Choir, and the Dale Warland Singers. His works have been recorded by several labels, including GIA Publications and Naxos. He has received numerous awards and honors for his music, including the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award and the McKnight Fellowship for Composers. Despite his success as a composer, Kantor remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to write music that is both beautiful and meaningful, and his works have touched the hearts of countless listeners around the world.
