He was the son of two musicians, his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Vieru was exposed to music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He showed great talent and passion for music, and his parents recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Vieru began his formal music education at the George Enescu Music High School in Bucharest, where he studied piano with Florica Musicescu, a renowned Romanian pianist and teacher. He continued his studies at the National University of Music Bucharest, where he earned a degree in piano performance. During his studies, Vieru won several national and international piano competitions, including the George Enescu International Piano Competition in 1975 and the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud International Piano Competition in 1978. After completing his studies, Vieru began his career as a concert pianist, performing in major concert halls and festivals around the world. He was known for his virtuosic technique, musical sensitivity, and deep understanding of the repertoire. He performed a wide range of music, from the Baroque era to contemporary works, and was particularly admired for his interpretations of the music of Chopin, Liszt, and Enescu. Vieru also had a successful career as a music educator. He taught at the National University of Music Bucharest, where he was a professor of piano and chamber music. He was also a visiting professor at several universities and conservatories around the world, including the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, and the Conservatoire de Paris. Vieru was known for his dedication to his students and his ability to inspire and guide them to reach their full potential. Throughout his career, Vieru received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. In 1990, he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Romania, and in 2000, he was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the Romanian government. He was also a member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. One of the highlights of Vieru's career was his performance at the 1986 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. He was one of the finalists in the competition and received critical acclaim for his performance of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor. His performance was described as "brilliant" and "sensitive," and he was praised for his ability to convey the emotional depth and complexity of the music. Another notable performance by Vieru was his recital at the Wigmore Hall in London in 1992. The concert was highly anticipated, and Vieru did not disappoint. He performed a program of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Enescu, and received a standing ovation from the audience. The concert was recorded and released as a CD, which received critical acclaim and further cemented Vieru's reputation as one of the leading pianists of his generation. Sadly, Vieru's career was cut short by his untimely death in 2010 at the age of 57. He had been diagnosed with cancer and had been undergoing treatment, but his condition worsened, and he passed away in Bucharest. His death was a great loss to the music world, and he was mourned by his colleagues, students, and fans around the world.More....
