He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. From a young age, Hoffmann showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Hoffmann's talent was quickly recognized, and he began studying at the Vienna Conservatory at the age of ten. He studied under some of the most renowned music teachers in Austria, including Hans Swarowsky and Bruno Seidlhofer. Hoffmann's dedication and hard work paid off, and he graduated from the conservatory with top honors. After completing his studies, Hoffmann began performing in various concerts and recitals throughout Austria. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented pianist and was invited to perform at some of the most prestigious venues in the country. In 1972, he won the prestigious International Beethoven Competition in Vienna, which further cemented his reputation as a world-class pianist. Hoffmann's career continued to flourish, and he began performing in concerts and recitals throughout Europe and the United States. He was known for his virtuosic performances and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert. One of the highlights of Hoffmann's career was his performance at the Salzburg Festival in 1980. He was invited to perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Herbert von Karajan.
