Steve Mair is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born on 14th June 1965 in London, England. From a young age, Mair showed a keen interest in music and began playing the double bass at the age of 11. He was inspired by his father, who was a jazz pianist, and his mother, who was a classical pianist. Mair's talent was quickly recognized, and he was accepted into the prestigious Purcell School of Music in London. He continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, where he was awarded a scholarship to study with renowned double bassist Rodney Slatford. Mair graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1987 and a Master of Music degree in 1988. After completing his studies, Mair began his professional career as a freelance musician, performing with various orchestras and ensembles. He quickly established himself as one of the leading double bassists in the UK and was in high demand for his exceptional technique and musicality. Mair's career highlights include performances with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. He has also performed with some of the world's leading conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Colin Davis, and Valery Gergiev. In addition to his orchestral work, Mair is also a highly respected chamber musician. He has performed with some of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Nash Ensemble, the Endellion String Quartet, and the London Sinfonietta. Mair is also a member of the London Chamber Orchestra and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble. Mair's talent has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1991, he was awarded the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society's Young Artist Award. He was also a finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 1984. Mair is also a highly respected teacher and has taught at some of the UK's leading music institutions, including the Royal Academy of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the Royal Northern College of Music. He is currently a professor of double bass at the Royal College of Music in London. In addition to his performing and teaching career, Mair is also a keen advocate for the double bass and has commissioned numerous new works for the instrument. He has also recorded several solo albums, including his critically acclaimed recording of Giovanni Bottesini's Double Bass Concerto No. 2 with the London Symphony Orchestra. Mair's contribution to the world of classical music has been significant, and his talent and dedication to his craft have earned him a place among the world's leading double bassists.
