He was the son of a prominent Czech composer, Josef Bohuslav Sommer, who was a professor at the Prague Conservatory. Vladimír Sommer grew up in a musical family and was exposed to music from a young age. He began playing the piano at the age of six and later learned to play the violin and the viola. Sommer studied composition at the Prague Conservatory under the tutelage of Alois Hába, a prominent Czech composer and music theorist. Hába was known for his use of microtonal scales and his interest in non-traditional forms of music. Sommer was greatly influenced by Hába's teachings and incorporated many of his ideas into his own compositions. Sommer's early works were heavily influenced by the music of his father and other Czech composers such as Leoš Janáček and Bohuslav Martinů. His first major work, the String Quartet No. 1, was composed in 1943 and was well-received by critics. The quartet showcased Sommer's skill as a composer and his ability to blend traditional and modern elements in his music. In the years following World War II, Sommer became increasingly interested in avant-garde music and began experimenting with new forms and techniques. He was particularly interested in electronic music and was one of the first Czech composers to use electronic instruments in his compositions. His interest in electronic music led him to collaborate with the Czech composer and inventor František Alois Drtikol, who had developed a new electronic instrument called the Variophon. Sommer's most famous work, the opera The Birth of Music, was composed in 1958 and premiered at the National Theatre in Prague. The opera tells the story of the creation of music and features a wide range of musical styles and techniques, including electronic music and microtonal scales. The Birth of Music was a critical and commercial success and cemented Sommer's reputation as one of the leading composers of his generation. Throughout his career, Sommer composed a wide range of works, including orchestral pieces, chamber music, and vocal music. He was known for his use of unconventional forms and techniques and his ability to blend traditional and modern elements in his music. His works were performed throughout Europe and the United States and were praised for their originality and creativity. Sommer continued to compose music until his death on February 25, 1997, in Prague, Czech Republic. He left behind a legacy of innovative and groundbreaking music that continues to inspire and influence composers today.More....
