Artist Info
Role:EnsemblePeriod:ModernThe Pascal String Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over two decades. The quartet was founded in 1994 by four talented musicians who shared a passion for chamber music and a desire to create a unique sound that would set them apart from other ensembles. The founding members of the Pascal String Quartet were violinists Kyung Sun Lee and Melia Watras, violist Kara Eubanks, and cellist Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir. All four musicians had impressive backgrounds and had already established themselves as accomplished performers in their own right. Lee had won numerous awards and had performed as a soloist with major orchestras around the world. Watras had been a member of the Seattle Symphony and had performed as a soloist with the Seattle Philharmonic. Eubanks had performed with the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, while Thorsteinsdóttir had won the prestigious Naumburg Competition and had performed as a soloist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. The quartet's name, Pascal, was chosen as a tribute to the French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal, who once said, "The heart has its reasons, which reason does not know." This quote reflects the quartet's belief that music is a language that speaks to the heart and soul, and that it has the power to move and inspire people in ways that cannot be explained by reason alone. From the beginning, the Pascal String Quartet set out to create a unique sound that blended the individual voices of each instrument into a seamless whole. They worked tirelessly to perfect their technique and to develop a deep understanding of the music they were playing. Their dedication paid off, and they quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional performances and their ability to bring new life to even the most familiar works. Over the years, the Pascal String Quartet has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Berlin Philharmonic. They have collaborated with some of the most celebrated musicians of our time, including pianist Emanuel Ax, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and violinist Joshua Bell. They have also recorded several critically acclaimed albums, including a complete cycle of Beethoven's string quartets. One of the highlights of the Pascal String Quartet's career was their performance at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. They were chosen to represent the United States in the Cultural Olympiad, a showcase of the world's finest artists and performers. Their performance was broadcast to millions of people around the world, and it was widely praised for its beauty and emotional power. The Pascal String Quartet has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors. They were awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2003, which recognizes outstanding young musicians who have the potential for major careers in classical music. They have also been awarded the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that have demonstrated a commitment to performing new and innovative works. Despite their many accomplishments, the members of the Pascal String Quartet remain humble and dedicated to their craft. They continue to push themselves to new heights, always striving to create music that speaks to the heart and soul.More....
