Shahrokh Yadegari is a renowned Iranian-American composer, sound artist, and researcher who has made significant contributions to the field of contemporary classical music. Born in Tehran, Iran in 1963, Yadegari grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a composer and conductor, and his mother was a singer and pianist. Yadegari began studying music at the age of six and showed a natural talent for composition. Yadegari's early musical education was in the traditional Persian classical music style, which he studied with his father and other prominent musicians in Iran. He also studied Western classical music and electronic music, which he was introduced to while studying at the Tehran Conservatory of Music. Yadegari's interest in electronic music led him to pursue further studies in the United States, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College in Oakland, California. Yadegari's compositions are characterized by a unique blend of traditional Persian music and contemporary Western classical music. He has created a new style of music that incorporates elements of both traditions, resulting in a sound that is both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition. Yadegari's works often feature electronic and computer-generated sounds, which he uses to create complex and intricate textures. One of Yadegari's most notable works is "The Choice," a multimedia opera that explores the themes of choice and destiny. The opera was commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission and premiered in 2009 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. "The Choice" features a libretto by Iranian-American writer Roya Hakakian and incorporates elements of Persian classical music, Western classical music, and electronic music. The opera was well-received by critics and audiences alike and was praised for its innovative use of multimedia technology. Another notable work by Yadegari is "Invisible," a multimedia installation that explores the concept of invisibility. The installation features a series of interactive sound sculptures that respond to the movements of the viewer. "Invisible" was exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2012 and was later shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tehran. Yadegari has also collaborated with a number of other artists and musicians throughout his career. He has worked with choreographer Alonzo King on several dance productions, including "Rasa" and "Scheherazade." He has also collaborated with the Kronos Quartet, a renowned string quartet that specializes in contemporary classical music. Yadegari's collaboration with the Kronos Quartet resulted in the creation of "Music for a Land and Time," a multimedia work that explores the history and culture of Iran. In addition to his work as a composer and sound artist, Yadegari is also a respected researcher and educator. He has taught at a number of universities and institutions, including the San Francisco Art Institute and the University of California, Berkeley. Yadegari's research focuses on the intersection of music, technology, and culture, and he has published numerous articles and papers on the subject. Yadegari's contributions to the field of contemporary classical music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors.
