Larry Lipkis is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the world of music as a composer, performer, and educator. Born in 1954 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lipkis showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later learned to play the bassoon and became passionate about classical music. Lipkis attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. He then went on to pursue a Master of Music degree in bassoon performance at the Yale School of Music. During his time at Yale, Lipkis studied with renowned bassoonist Arthur Weisberg and performed with the Yale Symphony Orchestra. After completing his studies, Lipkis began his career as a professional musician. He performed with several orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He also played with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the New York Woodwind Quintet. In addition to his work as a performer, Lipkis is also a prolific composer. He has written numerous works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. His compositions have been performed by many of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. One of Lipkis's most notable compositions is his Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra, which was premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1985. The concerto has since been performed by many other orchestras and has become a staple of the bassoon repertoire. Lipkis has also received numerous awards and honors for his work as a composer and performer. In 1986, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, which allowed him to travel to Europe and study the music of the Baroque era. He has taught at several universities, including the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and Haverford College. He is currently a professor of music at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
