Retrover Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2015 by a group of talented musicians who shared a passion for performing classical music. The ensemble is based in New York City and is known for its unique approach to classical music, which combines traditional classical music with contemporary elements. The main members of Retrover Ensemble are violinist and artistic director, Yoon Kwon, cellist, Michael Katz, and pianist, Adam Golka. All three members are accomplished musicians in their own right, having performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras and ensembles. Yoon Kwon, the artistic director of Retrover Ensemble, is a graduate of the Juilliard School and has performed as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. Michael Katz, the cellist of the ensemble, is a graduate of the Juilliard School and has performed as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. Adam Golka, the pianist of the ensemble, is a graduate of the Julliard School and has performed as a soloist with the Houston Symphony, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. Since its founding, Retrover Ensemble has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. The ensemble has also performed at numerous music festivals, including the Aspen Music Festival, the Tanglewood Music Festival, and the Ravinia Festival. One of the highlights of Retrover Ensemble's career was their performance at Carnegie Hall in 2017. The ensemble performed a program that included works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Schumann, as well as a contemporary piece by composer, Michael Brown. The performance was met with critical acclaim, with The New York Times describing the ensemble as "a group of musicians who play with a rare combination of technical precision and emotional depth." In addition to their performances, Retrover Ensemble has also received numerous awards and accolades. In 2016, the ensemble was awarded the Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Grant, which allowed them to work with young musicians in underserved communities. The ensemble was also awarded the 2017-2018 Ensemble-in-Residence at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where they worked with students and performed concerts throughout the academic year.
