Alex Woolf is a British composer who was born in London in 1987. He grew up in a musical family, with his mother being a pianist and his father a composer. Woolf started playing the piano at the age of four and began composing his own music at the age of eight. Woolf attended the Purcell School for Young Musicians, where he studied composition with Simon Speare and piano with Tessa Nicholson. He then went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. During his time at the Royal Academy of Music, Woolf studied with Simon Bainbridge, Philip Cashian, and David Sawer. Woolf's music has been performed by a number of orchestras and ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta, and the Aurora Orchestra. He has also collaborated with a number of soloists, including pianist Joanna MacGregor and cellist Matthew Barley. One of Woolf's most notable works is his opera A Feast in the Time of Plague, which was commissioned by the Royal Opera House and premiered in 2015. The opera tells the story of a group of people who are trapped in a house during the Great Plague of London in 1665. The work received critical acclaim, with The Guardian describing it as "a powerful and moving piece of music theatre." Woolf has also composed a number of works for orchestra, including his Symphony No. 1, which was commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2017.
