RIAS-Unterhaltungsorchester is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1949 in Berlin, Germany. The ensemble was established by the Rundfunk im amerikanischen Sektor (RIAS), which was a radio station that was operated by the United States Information Agency. The purpose of the ensemble was to provide entertainment for the American troops stationed in Berlin after World War II. The RIAS-Unterhaltungsorchester was initially led by conductor Werner Müller, who was known for his innovative arrangements of popular music. Müller's arrangements were a blend of classical and jazz music, which was a new and exciting sound for audiences at the time. The ensemble quickly gained popularity and became a fixture in the Berlin music scene. Over the years, the RIAS-Unterhaltungsorchester has had many talented musicians as members. Some of the most notable members include pianist and composer Horst Jankowski, who was known for his hit song "A Walk in the Black Forest," and saxophonist Klaus Doldinger, who composed the music for the popular German film "Das Boot." The RIAS-Unterhaltungsorchester has performed at many major events and venues throughout its history. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was at the 1953 Berlin International Film Festival, where they performed the music for the film "The Robe." The ensemble also performed at the 1957 World Youth Festival in Moscow, where they were awarded the festival's top prize. In addition to its live performances, the RIAS-Unterhaltungsorchester has also recorded many albums over the years. Some of the ensemble's most popular recordings include "Werner Müller and His Orchestra Play Classics," "The Best of Horst Jankowski," and "Klaus Doldinger's Passport." The RIAS-Unterhaltungsorchester has received many awards and accolades over the years. In 1955, the ensemble was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for their recording of "The Robe." The ensemble was also awarded the German Record Critics' Award in 1973 for their album "Werner Müller and His Orchestra Play Classics." Despite its many successes, the RIAS-Unterhaltungsorchester faced financial difficulties in the 1990s and was eventually disbanded in 1994. However, the ensemble's legacy lives on through its recordings and the many musicians who were members over the years. In conclusion, the RIAS-Unterhaltungsorchester was a groundbreaking classical music ensemble that blended classical and jazz music to create a new and exciting sound. The ensemble's innovative arrangements and talented musicians made it a fixture in the Berlin music scene for many years. The RIAS-Unterhaltungsorchester's many performances and recordings have left a lasting legacy in the world of classical music.
