Gertraut Stoklassa was born on May 12, 1952, in Vienna, Austria. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her father being a violinist and her mother a pianist. From a young age, Stoklassa showed a natural talent for music and began studying the piano at the age of six. Stoklassa's musical education continued at the Vienna Music Academy, where she studied under renowned pianist and pedagogue Hans Graf. She graduated with honors in 1974 and went on to pursue further studies in Paris with Yvonne Lefébure and in London with Maria João Pires. Stoklassa's career as a concert pianist began in the late 1970s, and she quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso performer with a deep understanding of the classical repertoire. She made her debut at the Vienna Musikverein in 1980, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Zubin Mehta. Over the course of her career, Stoklassa has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. She has also collaborated with some of the most distinguished conductors of our time, such as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, and Riccardo Muti. Stoklassa's repertoire is wide-ranging, encompassing works from the Baroque era to the present day. She is particularly renowned for her interpretations of the music of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, and has recorded complete cycles of their piano sonatas. Stoklassa has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1985, she was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Music, and in 1992 she was made an honorary member of the Vienna Konzerthaus. She has also been awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Austria and the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Republic. In addition to her performing career, Stoklassa is also a dedicated teacher. She has taught at the Vienna Music Academy and the Mozarteum University Salzburg, and has given masterclasses around the world. Many of her students have gone on to successful careers as performers and teachers in their own right. Despite her many achievements, Stoklassa remains humble and dedicated to her art. She once said in an interview, "Music is a lifelong journey, and I am still learning every day. It is a privilege to be able to share this journey with others through my performances and teaching." Gertraut Stoklassa continues to perform and teach, and her contributions to the world of classical music are widely recognized and celebrated.
