In 1940, Hans-Erik Philip graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Music with a degree in composition. He then began working as a freelance composer and music teacher. Hans-Erik Philip's music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and use of traditional forms.
