Steve Elson is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. Born in New York City, Elson grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a jazz musician, and his mother was a classical pianist. Elson started playing the saxophone at the age of 12 and quickly developed a passion for music. Elson attended the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied classical saxophone. He also studied with renowned saxophonist Joe Allard, who had a significant influence on his playing style. After completing his studies, Elson started performing with various jazz and classical ensembles in New York City. In the early 1980s, Elson joined the Philip Glass Ensemble, a group that performed the music of composer Philip Glass. Elson played saxophone and other woodwind instruments in the ensemble and became an integral part of the group. He performed with the Philip Glass Ensemble for over 20 years and played on many of their recordings. Elson has also worked with other notable composers, including John Zorn, Laurie Anderson, and David Byrne. He has performed on numerous film soundtracks, including The Departed, The Aviator, and The Wolf of Wall Street. Elson has also recorded several albums as a solo artist, including Mott and Other Works and Shadowland. One of Elson's most significant performances was at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. He was invited to perform with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, and his performance was broadcast to millions of people around the world. Elson has also performed at the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center. Elson has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1998, he was awarded a Grammy for his work on the album Symphony No. 9 by composer Philip Glass. He has also received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts. In addition to his work as a performer, Elson is also a respected educator. He has taught at the Manhattan School of Music, the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
