Bart Quartier is a Belgian classical music composer, born on October 22, 1967, in the city of Ghent. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional trumpet player and his mother a music teacher. From a young age, Quartier showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano and percussion instruments. Quartier's formal music education began at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, where he studied percussion under the guidance of André Van Belle and Jan Pustjens. He later went on to study composition with Lucien Goethals and Frank Nuyts. During his time at the conservatory, Quartier developed a deep understanding of classical music and began to experiment with different styles and techniques. After completing his studies, Quartier began his career as a composer, creating works that were both innovative and deeply rooted in the classical tradition. His compositions were characterized by their intricate rhythms, complex harmonies, and use of unconventional instruments. One of Quartier's most notable works is his marimba concerto, "Kebjar-Bali," which was commissioned by the Belgian National Orchestra in 2001. The piece is inspired by the music of Bali and features a solo marimba accompanied by a full orchestra. The concerto has been performed by some of the world's leading percussionists, including Keiko Abe and Nancy Zeltsman. Another highlight of Quartier's career is his collaboration with the Belgian dance company, Rosas. Quartier composed the music for several of the company's productions, including "Bitches Brew/Tacoma Narrows" and "Zeitung." His music was praised for its ability to capture the energy and emotion of the dancers, and for its seamless integration with the choreography. In addition to his work as a composer, Quartier is also a respected educator and has taught at several music schools and conservatories throughout Europe. He has also written several instructional books on percussion and composition, including "The Percussionist's Art" and "The Composer's Craft." Quartier's music has been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music, including the Flanders Prize for Music in 2009. Despite his success, Quartier remains dedicated to pushing the boundaries of classical music and exploring new avenues of expression. His music continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world, and his legacy as a composer and educator is sure to endure for generations to come.
