Frédéric de Roos was a Belgian classical music composer and conductor who was born on September 18, 1936, in Brussels, Belgium. He was the son of a diplomat and spent his childhood traveling around the world. This exposure to different cultures and musical traditions had a profound impact on his musical style. De Roos began his musical education at the age of six, studying piano and composition with his mother. He later studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he received a degree in composition. He also studied conducting with Igor Markevitch and Pierre Boulez. In 1960, de Roos won the Prix de Rome, a prestigious award for young composers. This award allowed him to study in Italy for two years, where he was exposed to the works of Italian composers such as Verdi and Puccini. This experience had a significant impact on his musical style, and he began incorporating elements of Italian opera into his compositions. De Roos began his career as a conductor in 1963, when he was appointed as the conductor of the Royal Opera of Wallonia in Liège, Belgium. He remained in this position for five years, during which time he conducted numerous operas and ballets. He also began to gain recognition as a composer, with his works being performed by orchestras throughout Europe. In 1968, de Roos was appointed as the conductor of the Belgian Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra. He remained in this position for 15 years, during which time he conducted numerous concerts and recordings. He also continued to compose, with his works being performed by orchestras throughout Europe and the United States. One of de Roos's most significant achievements as a composer was his opera, "Le Balcon," which premiered in 1972. The opera was based on the play by Jean Genet and was a critical and commercial success. It was later performed at the Paris Opera and the Royal Opera House in London. De Roos also composed numerous film scores throughout his career, including the score for the 1971 film "The Beguiled," directed by Don Siegel and starring Clint Eastwood. The score was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, de Roos was also a professor of composition at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He taught numerous students, many of whom went on to have successful careers in music. De Roos received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of the Crown from the Belgian government and the Prix de l'Académie Royale de Belgique. He was also a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium. De Roos continued to compose and conduct until his death on January 28, 2011, at the age of 74. He left behind a legacy of innovative and influential compositions, as well as a reputation as one of Belgium's most important classical music figures.
