La Real Cámara is a Spanish classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of Baroque and Classical music. The group was founded in 1990 by Emilio Moreno, a renowned Spanish viola da gamba player, and has since become one of the most respected and sought-after ensembles in the world of early music. Emilio Moreno was born in Madrid in 1958 and began his musical studies at a young age. He studied the viola da gamba with Jordi Savall and Wieland Kuijken, two of the most prominent early music performers of the time. Moreno quickly established himself as a virtuoso performer and began to collaborate with other musicians in the early music scene. In 1990, Moreno founded La Real Cámara with a group of like-minded musicians who shared his passion for early music. The ensemble takes its name from the Royal Chamber Orchestra of King Philip V of Spain, which was active in the early 18th century. La Real Cámara's mission is to revive the music of this period and to bring it to a wider audience. La Real Cámara's repertoire includes works by composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Antonio Vivaldi, and Georg Philipp Telemann, as well as lesser-known composers of the Baroque and Classical periods. The ensemble performs on period instruments, which are replicas of the instruments that were used in the 17th and 18th centuries. Over the years, La Real Cámara has performed at some of the most prestigious music festivals and concert halls in the world. The ensemble has been invited to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, the Festival de Saintes, and the Festival de Sablé, among others. They have also performed at major concert halls such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, and the Wigmore Hall in London. La Real Cámara has received numerous awards and accolades for their performances. In 2001, they were awarded the National Music Prize by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a musician in Spain. The ensemble has also been awarded the Diapason d'Or, the Choc de la Musique, and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, among other awards. One of the highlights of La Real Cámara's career was their performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2000. The performance was hailed as a triumph by critics and audiences alike, and it cemented La Real Cámara's reputation as one of the finest early music ensembles in the world. In addition to their performances, La Real Cámara has also recorded extensively. The ensemble has released over 20 albums, many of which have received critical acclaim. Their recordings of Handel's opera Ariodante and Vivaldi's opera La Verità in Cimento were both nominated for Grammy Awards. La Real Cámara continues to be a leading force in the world of early music. The ensemble's commitment to historical accuracy and their passion for the music of the Baroque and Classical periods has earned them a devoted following and a place among the most respected musicians in the world.
