C4, also known as the Choral Composer/Conductor Collective, is a classical music ensemble based in New York City. The group was founded in 2005 by four composers and conductors: Martha Sullivan, David Harris, Jonathan David, and Karen Siegel. The ensemble's mission is to promote new choral music and to provide a platform for emerging composers and conductors. The founding members of C4 all had a background in choral music and were passionate about creating new works. They saw a need for a group that would focus on contemporary choral music and provide a space for composers and conductors to collaborate and experiment. The group started with just a handful of members, but quickly grew in popularity and reputation. Today, C4 is made up of over 30 singers, composers, and conductors. The group is led by artistic director and conductor, Melissa Wozniak. The ensemble's members come from diverse backgrounds and bring a range of musical styles and influences to their work. One of the highlights of C4's career was their performance at the 2011 National Conference of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). The group was selected to perform as part of the conference's New Music Reading Session, which showcases new works by emerging composers. C4 performed three pieces by member composers, including "The Nightingale" by Karen Siegel, "The World is Too Much With Us" by Martha Sullivan, and "The Garden of Love" by Jonathan David. C4 has also been recognized for their work in promoting new choral music. In 2012, the ensemble was awarded the Chorus America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. The award recognizes ensembles that demonstrate a commitment to performing new and innovative works. C4 was recognized for their programming of new works by emerging composers, as well as their collaborations with other artists and organizations. In addition to their performances and awards, C4 is also known for their educational outreach programs. The group regularly works with schools and community organizations to promote choral music and to provide opportunities for young composers and conductors. C4 also hosts workshops and masterclasses for emerging composers and conductors. C4's repertoire includes a wide range of styles and influences, from traditional choral music to contemporary works that incorporate elements of jazz, pop, and world music. The group has commissioned and premiered works by a number of emerging composers, including Jocelyn Hagen, Dale Trumbore, and Joshua Shank. One of C4's most notable performances was their 2015 concert, "The New Romantics." The concert featured works by composers who were inspired by the Romantic era, but who also incorporated contemporary elements into their music. The program included works by Eric Whitacre, Ola Gjeilo, and Morten Lauridsen, as well as a world premiere by member composer, Karen Siegel. C4 has also collaborated with a number of other artists and organizations, including the New York Philharmonic, the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and the New York City Gay Men's Chorus. The group has performed at a number of prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. In conclusion, C4 is a classical music ensemble that is dedicated to promoting new choral music and providing opportunities for emerging composers and conductors. The group was founded in 2005 by four composers and conductors who saw a need for a group that would focus on contemporary choral music.More....
